Nineties nostalgia...

On my way in to work this morning I randomly flipped through the radio stations (something I rarely do) and was transported back to the 90's by The Cranberries, Dreams.  Few songs have the capability of doing this, but suddenly I was back in high school, wearing bad jeans, horribly boxy sweaters from Abercrombie & Fitch and wishing I was Claire Danes on My So Called Life so that I could kiss Jordan Catalano (sigh).

As a teenager living in the suburbs of St. Louis, attending a small, private school, I feel like my friends and I were caught somewhere between the fashion styles of Nirvana grunge and the preppy school-girl look worn by Alicia Silverstone in Clueless.  The complications of this fashion sense were compounded by the fact that we couldn't wear shorts or skirts more than three inches above our knees at school.  This resulted in some kind of middle ground fashion that involved high waisted baggy jeans, plaid flannel shirts and, unfortunately, braided belts, or plaid skirts, tights and doc martens.  And we hadn't exactly mastered the best way to layer our hair.

The 90's itself was kind of a misfit decade in it's own right and between breaking away from the neon and lycra of the 80's and the end of the 20th century, the style of the 90's ended up as a sort of non-style and was, compared to earlier decades, almost forgettable.  (Which isn't necessarily a bad thing considering none of us had met a CHI flat iron or knew what a VPL was due to the enormous amount of excess fabric in our pants).  Thankfully, this morning, I could simply turn my radio up and blast The Cranberries, just like I did back in the day...but with much better hair and some fierce jeans.

In honor of our misfit decade, a collection of memories:
